POSITION SUMMARY

Reporting to the Director of Planned Giving, this is a key position within the Development Department and plays a primary role in face-to-face donor engagement, solicitation, and stewardship, focusing on high-capacity prospects for deferred and blended gifts.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

In partnership with the Director, support planned giving program revenue growth by building strong relationships with donors and team members. This position:

  • Develops and cultivates relationships, solicits and closes gifts, ensures appropriate and timely stewardship, and manages a portfolio of 100-120 individuals with a focus on planned and blended gifts, including bequests, life income gifts, and gifts of non-cash assets.
  • Travels nationally (up to 50% of the time) for in-person donor and prospect meetings.
  • Advances relationships with qualified prospects by positioning themselves as a trusted partner for donors looking to achieve meaningful philanthropic goals.
  • Creates individual goals and a comprehensive plan for each person in the portfolio; tracks portfolio activity and progress.
  • Prepares proposals and other supporting materials for donors who have been solicited for or have otherwise expressed an interest in a planned gift.
  • Builds collaborative relationships with gift officers on the Individual Giving team to identify prospects and create holistic cultivation and solicitation plans for major donors that lead to transformational gifts.
  • Becomes a valued partner across philanthropy on blended gift strategies; offers expertise on gifts of complex gifts, and partners in solicitations as necessary.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of relevant tax, probate, trust, and financial/estate planning principles and any relevant tax law updates. This knowledge appropriately addresses individual donor needs and goals.
  • Participates in fostering a culture of philanthropy by promoting planned giving throughout the organization.

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • 5+ years experience in a nonprofit, political, or related organization with a successful planned giving or fundraising record.
  • A demonstrated knowledge of planned giving vehicles, including wills, living trusts, beneficiary designations, and charitable gift annuities as well as a fundamental understanding of charitable remainder trusts.
  • A primary orientation towards long-term relationship-building and donor-centered cultivation strategies.
  • Ability to understand and explain details of assets and complex gifts accurately and clearly.
  • Willingness to travel throughout the United States frequently.
  • Ability to communicate confidently and effectively with coworkers, program leaders, donors, and prospects; must have especially strong written, verbal, and listening skills.
  • Confident, yet sensitive demeanor with the ability to connect with all constituencies and help them connect with Ocean Conservancy’s mission.
  • Familiarity with Raiser’s Edge donor management system or similar CRM database preferred.
  • Strong planning skills and ability to prioritize tasks to achieve goals in a timely manner.
  • Strong moral and ethical character and a commitment to conservation.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

Bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience required.

COMPENSATION

Ocean Conservancy is committed to equity in its pay practices and posts expected hiring ranges for each position. We are targeting a hiring range of min salary of $72,000 to the midpoint of $89,900.00, which will be commensurate with the candidate’s specialty skills, years of experience, location, and unique background. We are open to feedback from the market and would welcome the ability to connect with potential candidates whose salary requirements may be outside of the expected hiring range.

COVID-19 VACCINATION REQUIREMENT
