2023-099 Plastics Policy Analyst

POSITION SUMMARY

The Plastics Policy Analyst will work with a team of Ocean Conservancy scientists, policy advocates, and communications staff to advance U.S. state and federal policy campaigns to reduce plastic pollution. They are responsible for conducting policy research and analysis; reading and synthesizing policies and recommendations; and generating written products to support Ocean Conservancy’s work with policy makers and our partners.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Research, analyze and develop legislative and administrative policies and provide written and verbal analysis of such developments.
  • Working with the US Plastics Policy team, develop, coordinate and implement strategies to advance Ocean Conservancy’s goals to reduce plastic production and pollution.
  • Develop written materials to support Ocean Conservancy’s policy efforts, including memos, one-page explainers, fact sheets, oral and written testimony, position papers, talking points, blog posts, reports, and presentations.
  • Coordinate on plastic policy-related topics across state, regional, and national initiatives across Ocean Conservancy’s program areas and departments including working collaboratively with the Trash Free Seas® Ocean Plastic Research team and supporting the Climate and Plastics Initiative’s domestic policy efforts.
  • Collaborate with partners and coalitions around campaign opportunities, manage relationships and advance Ocean Conservancy’s goals.
  • Represent the Trash Free Seas® team at relevant meetings and provide notes as requested.
  • Organize and support policy advocacy, such as stakeholder fly-ins, communication campaigns and special events.
  • Work collaboratively with cross-cutting program staff, including communications, government relations and development to keep Ocean Conservancy members, activists, funders and the public informed about program activities, objectives and achievements through press releases, newsletter articles, webinars, action alerts, media interviews and grant reports.
  • Performs other duties to advance Ocean Conservancy’s goals and mission.

REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS/EXPERIENCE

  • Minimum of three years of relevant experience, which could include working with NGOs; Congress; state, local, federal or international governments.
  • Thorough understanding of policy making process including understanding legislative tools for creating change and reading and editing legislative drafts.
  • Strong research skills with the ability to analyze and synthesize complex policy information.
  • Demonstrated ability to integrate across disciplines and work collaboratively with diverse teams, networks, and coalitions.
  • Familiarity with relevant policy fields including, environment policy, waste management, and climate and energy.
  • Ability to take initiative and advance multiple projects at the same time with the ability to see the big picture and remain attentive to details, deadlines, and deliverables.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and the ability to prepare written documents quickly, clearly and efficiently.
  • Collaborative team player; willing to take on a variety of tasks to further the program goals.
  • Experience working with Outlook, Word, PowerPoint, and Excel.

EDUCATION/TRAINING

  • B.A. required.
  • Advanced degree in environmental policy or science, political science or environmental law preferred.

COMPENSATION
Ocean Conservancy is committed to equity in its pay practices and posts expected hiring ranges for each of its positions. Salary minimum is $63,036; salary midpoint is $92,597. The midpoint represents the market rate for a position, and a fully experienced employee may be paid at this level. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s specialty skills, years of experience, location and unique background.  We would welcome the opportunity to connect with potential candidates whose salary requirements may be outside of the expected hiring range.
