Associate Director, Digital Advocacy

POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Director of Digital Advocacy will report directly to the Senior Director of Digital Outreach and will be responsible for developing and managing online engagement strategies to advance Ocean Conservancy’s conservation priorities. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of creating compelling, effective digital campaigns, with experience in reporting metrics, successes and lessons learned.

They will have a balance between strong technical skills and the ability to communicate professionally and effectively and will be knowledgeable about the digital advocacy landscape. The Associate Director of Digital Advocacy is also responsible for managing staff and projects. They will play an integral role in advancing Ocean Conservancy’s program initiatives, engaging the public and key target audiences in meaningful advocacy and outreach opportunities and contributing to the overall success of program victories.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Management: Supervise at least two members of the Digital team.
  • Advocacy: Oversee, manage and implement strategies for digital-supporter engagement and online advocacy campaigns, working with cross-departmental teams when necessary, and leading the analysis and reporting on these campaigns.
  • Reporting: Lead the reporting for advocacy campaigns and email list acquisition and develop new areas for tracking and metrics. Report out on a monthly basis in addition to ad-hoc reports for senior leaders within the organization.
  • Programs: Develop digital outreach strategy and work plans for two priority programs that move the program goals forward and engage our supporters. Kick-start and generate ideas for advocacy campaigns with the program teams. Take the ideas and shepherd them into successful efforts.
  • Multi-Channel Campaigning: Create and implement digital engagement strategies including digital advertising, acquisition and email list growth. Key channels include website, email-marketing, paid search advertising, search engine optimization, paid social and mobile. Stay abreast of changing landscape in digital marketing for practices that are feasible and impactful to campaign goals.
  • Production: Write and produce advocacy pages and email blasts. Troubleshoot issues that arise. Produce A/B test forms and templates. Lead the project to redesign email templates and newsletters. Train the team on advocacy production and be the ”go to” person for quality assurance and integration for advocacy efforts.
  • Audience Growth: Develop annual metric benchmarks for digital advocacy and email list size. Incorporate and test new avenues for email audience growth. Stay on top of trends within the community, manage Ocean Conservancy measurement protocols and identify areas and ways in which we can improve.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by supervisor.

EDUCATION/REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • A bachelor’s degree in communications or environmental studies is preferred.
  • 5-8 years’ experience in managing digital engagement with advocacy, congressional or political campaigns and/or nonprofit experience highly preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience of at least 3 years is required.
  • 5-8 years of experience managing dynamic digital advocacy programs and leading on digital marketing strategy.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, familiarity with AP style.
  • Excellent writing and communications skills.
  • Stellar project management skills and experience using project management software.
  • Thorough understanding of online communication, industry best practices and accessibility standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet tight deadlines and/or adapt to change.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office, WordPress, HTML, Google Analytics and Pay-per-click Advertising platforms (Facebook ads, Adwords, Bing, etc.).
  • Experience using SaaS platforms such as Engaging Network.
  • Experience manipulating/updating and importing/exporting simple sets of data.
  • Hands-on experience in email marketing, from copywriting to production and execution.
  • Ability to work well with a team and across teams.
  • Ability to work on one’s own with minimal direction
  • Ability to work collaboratively with supervisor, program leads and others in the organization.
  • Ability to stay flexible with changing work conditions due to Covid-19 and building renovation.
  • Ability to manage projects and staffs through a Zoom platform.
