Algalita founder and research director, Captain Charles Moore, was the first to discover the swirling soup of plastic debris in the Pacific’s northeastern gyre – known by many as the Great Pacific Garbage Patch.
Algalita Marine Research and Education is a leader in providing valuable educator resources and youth leadership opportunities to cultivate the next generation of ocean stewards combating plastic pollution. For over 20 years, Algalita has been working at all levels to understand the broken system that is causing the plastic pollution crisis. From science to policy, technological innovations to changing throwaway culture, their deep involvement in the issue has resulted in a growing network of opportunities and connections. Their expertise in plastic pollution research and thought leadership led them to be one of the co-founders of the Trash Free Seas Alliance® along with Ocean Conservancy in 2012, where they remain involved as a member and collaborator.
