POSITION SUMMARY

The Associate Director of Social Media will report directly to the Director of Digital Engagement and Advocacy and will be responsible for developing, reviewing and managing social media content, with a primary focus on LinkedIn, to expand Ocean Conservancy’s conservation priorities and institutional brand awareness. This position will lead the LinkedIn long-term and rapid response strategies for Ocean Conservancy and provide thoughtful oversight of audience engagement and growth across all channels. This position will also be responsible for developing strategies that elevate Ocean Conservancy’s thought leadership, with a particular focus on LinkedIn, and will identify messaging opportunities and strategies for certain individual staff’s messaging and outreach methods, including the CEO. The Associate Director of Social Media will work closely with the Director of Digital Engagement and Advocacy to lead, execute and report on multi-channel strategies for organization-wide campaigns, such as World Ocean Day, Earth Day, Giving Tuesday, Plastic Free July and more.

PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Strategy: Takes strategic initiative in Ocean Conservancy’s LinkedIn activities and develops and implements strategies to maximize engagements and impressions. Uses past performance metrics to help inform forward movement, but isn’t afraid to try bold, innovative approaches. Establishes and implements strategies and cadence for Ocean Conservancy’s thought leadership personal channels to help optimize their profiles and expand their reach as well as help Ocean Conservancy target thought leadership’s built-in networks. Leads on ‘per channel’ strategies for Ocean Conservancy’s other social media platforms and ensures best practices are being implemented.
  • Growth: Creates a strategic plan for reaching and engaging with advocacy targets, key partners/allies and potential funders through Ocean Conservancy’s LinkedIn as well as Ocean Conservancy’s thought leaders’ personal pages, based on our program and institutional goals. Closely monitors digital trends and provides strategic insight into growing our LinkedIn audience and moving them up the ladder of engagement. Works closely with the Director of Executive Communications to grow followership and presence of CEO’s social accounts.
  • Audience: Identifies new audiences and creates meaningful engagement plans, including responding to comments and questions in a timely manner. Incorporates and tests new avenues for audience growth. Stays on top of trends within the community and adapts strategies based on audiences’ evolving needs. Works with program and other organizational leaders to identify and ensure specific audiences are being reached and engaged with based on their priorities and goals. Leads audience mapping exercises with thought leaders to ensure targets are outlined and correct channels are being utilized.
  • Impact: Collaborates with Ocean Conservancy’s leadership to optimize impact and reach specific program-focused audiences to highlight Ocean Conservancy’s contributions to the conservation space.
  • Management: Supervises at least one member of the Digital team. Directly manages Ocean Conservancy’s LinkedIn channel. Helps manage messaging for Ocean Conservancy’s thought leadership personal social media channels. Helps manage relationship with digital advertising vendors.
  • Reporting: Oversees the reporting for social media outreach and develops new areas for tracking and metrics. Reports out on a monthly basis in addition to ad-hoc reports for leaders within the institution to inform program-specific digital outputs moving forward. Works closely with the Director of Executive Communications to pull and share CEO analytics to inform future content for her channels.
  • Programs: Liaises and joins at least one program team meeting to help advise and inform program efforts. Shares and highlights program social media successes with the program teams. Outlines the importance of social media outreach, as well as what messaging and outreach techniques are best for which platforms.
  • Production: Writes, produces and schedules social media posts. Stays on top of channel algorithms and advises changes to processes. Troubleshoots issues that arise. Helps with identifying and creating channel-specific social graphics and short-form videos. Helps with long-form writing, such as advocacy or cultivation emails to Ocean Conservancy members and supporters, as well as blogs for Ocean Conservancy’s website.
  • Campaigns: Collaborates with the Director of Digital Engagement and Advocacy, as well as the Digital team, on many of Ocean Conservancy’s priority campaigns, including World Ocean Day, Giving Tuesday and more. Leads and collaborates on digital toolkits created for outside messengers, including Ocean Conservancy staff and board members, coalition partners, influencers, elected officials and others.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.

EDUCATION/REQUIRED SKILLS/QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in communications, marketing or environmental studies is preferred or equivalent work experience.
  • At least seven years’ experience in managing digital engagement with advocacy, Congressional or political campaigns and/or nonprofit experience highly preferred.
  • Prior supervisory experience of at least three years is required.
  • At least seven years’ experience managing dynamic social media campaigns, strategies and rollouts.
  • Hands-on experience in day-to-day social media strategy, from copywriting to production and execution, with a focus on growing LinkedIn audiences for organizations or companies.
  • Experience using SaaS platforms such as Engaging Network.
  • Experience with social graphic creation and software, such as Photoshop or Canva.
  • Experience with video editing software, such as Canva, CapCut or iMovie
  • Experience manipulating/updating and importing/exporting simple sets of data.
  • Experience managing (or helping to manage) budgets.
  • Experience working with outside vendors or firms.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills and familiarity with AP style.
  • Excellent writing and communication skills in Standard American English required.
  • Stellar project management skills and experience using project management software.
  • Thorough understanding of online communication, industry best practices and accessibility standards.
  • Ability to manage multiple projects at once and meet tight deadlines and/or adapt to change.
  • Proficiency with LinkedIn, Microsoft Office, WordPress, Mac operating systems.
  • Demonstrated capacity to work effectively with diverse teams, collaborate across disciplines and work collaboratively.
  • Trusted and respected leader with experience leading individuals and teams to success.
  • Ability to work on one’s own with minimal direction.
  • Ability to manage projects and staff through a Zoom platform.

COMPENSATION

Ocean Conservancy is committed to equity in its pay practices and posts expected salary ranges for each of its positions. Compensation will be commensurate with the candidate’s specialty skills, years of experience, location, and unique background. The expected salary range is $90,389 to $132,825. We would welcome the opportunity to connect with potential candidates whose salary requirements may be outside of the expected range.
