Global Ghost Gear Initiative

“We simply cannot address the ocean plastic crisis without addressing the threat of ghost gear.” – Nick Mallos, Trash Free Seas® program senior director

Abandoned, lost or otherwise discarded fishing gear, known as “ghost gear,” is the most harmful form of debris to the many marine animals that call our ocean home.Ghost gear — like nets, long lines and fishing traps — continues to snare marine life long after it has been abandoned or lost, without anyone benefiting. And because nets are often made of plastic, they add to the plastic pollution in our ocean and persist for many years. The solutions rest in working together. The Global Ghost Gear Initiative (GGGI) is an international platform to tackle the problem. Ocean Conservancy assumed leadership of GGGI in 2019 and will build the coalition’s worldwide impact for years to come.First launched by World Animal Protection in 2015, the GGGI mobilizes more than 100 member organizations, businesses and governments to safeguard marine animals and ecosystems while protecting human health and livelihoods. The GGGI’s strength is in the diversity of its participants, which includes the fishing industry, private businesses, governments, academia and nonprofit organizations. All have an important role to play in ridding the ocean of this serious threat.Join us.
