Washington, D.C. – Today, Ocean Conservancy announced its participation in #TeamSeas, a global campaign to raise $30 million to remove 30 million pounds of plastic and trash from our ocean, rivers and beaches. The fundraising piece of the campaign, which launched today, will run through January 1, 2022 at midnight PT. The funded cleanup work is underway and is scheduled to conclude in three years.

#TeamSeas is spearheaded by YouTubers MrBeast and Mark Rober, with Ocean Conservancy and The Ocean Cleanup serving as the beneficiaries of the campaign. All donations to #TeamSeas will be split evenly between the two charities, which are each responsible for removing 15 million pounds of trash by the end of the campaign. Ocean Conservancy is #TeamSeas’s implementation partner for beaches and ocean, with The Ocean Cleanup serving as #TeamSeas’ implementation partner for rivers.

Ocean Conservancy has led the fight for a clean, trash-free ocean since 1986, when the organization launched its first annual International Coastal Cleanup (ICC) on a beach in Texas. Since then, the ICC has expanded to over 150 countries and has mobilized millions of volunteers to remove more than 350 million pounds of trash from beaches and waterways around the globe. Meanwhile, Ocean Conservancy has invested in cutting-edge research to advance scientific understanding of the ocean plastics crisis and works with conservationists, scientists, governments, the private sector and members of the public to reduce the problem upstream, call for reduction in single-use plastic most likely to end up in the ocean, and keep plastics from entering the ocean in the first place.

“Ocean Conservancy is thrilled to be a partner of the #TeamSeas campaign,” said Janis Searles Jones, CEO of Ocean Conservancy. “This campaign builds on our cleanup legacy and will bring the message of ocean conservation to countless new audiences. We know that cleanups can be the start of a lifelong journey for ocean activists. We’re excited to begin our work and achieve the goals we’ve set out for this campaign, while working with the creative minds of all the creators and fans taking part in #TeamSeas.”
