Suzanne (Sue) Woolsey (she/her) joined the National Academies of Sciences in 1989 as the executive director for Behavioral Social Sciences and Education. Sue went on to serve as the chief operating officer and chief communications officer for the National Academies of Sciences and Engineering and Institute of Medicine until 2003. Prior to her tenure at the National Academies, Sue worked for 10 years as a consultant focused on universities and research institutions. She also served as the associate director of the Office of Management and Budget during the Carter administration. Sue is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and currently serves on the boards of California Institute of Technology, Institute for Defense Analyses, and Colorado College. She also serves as an independent director of the Fluor Corporation and Invesco Chicago Mutual Funds. Sue previously served on numerous corporate and nonprofit boards including Van Kempen Mutual Funds, Neurogen Corporation, Intelligent Medical Devices, Rocky Mountain Institute, German Marshall Fund of the U.S., and Smithsonian Environmental Research Center. She earned a bachelor’s degree in history and psychology from Stanford University and  a master’s degree and Ph.D. in clinical and social psychology from Harvard University.
