WASHINGTON, D.C. – The following statement was issued by Jeff Watters, Ocean Conservancy’s Vice President of External Affairs, following yesterday’s House passage of the National Defense Authorization Act (NDAA):

“Ocean Conservancy applauds the inclusion of several important ocean bills and provisions in yesterday’s House passage of the NDAA. After many years of hard work to make this legislation a reality, we are pleased that Congress is on the verge of passing this robust ocean package.

“Specifically, the Regional Ocean Partnership Act will permanently establish a foundation for sensible, proactive ocean management exactly when we need it most. The bill also includes important provisions to protect sharks, help coral reefs, bolster ocean science, improve oil spill response, and more.

“The passage of this ocean package would be a final, major win at the conclusion of a Congress that has passed historic action and investments in climate action, including clean ports, responsible offshore wind, and coastal restoration. We call upon the Senate to pass this important package, and for President Biden to sign it into law.”
