WASHINGTON, DC – The following statement was issued by Katherine Tsantiris, Director of Government Relations, in response to the announcement of the updated social cost of carbon:

“We’re excited to see the federal government’s action to account for the social cost of carbon more accurately. This decision sends a resounding message that the cost of doing business or starting new projects should reflect the true costs of fossil fuel extraction and use. This is a step in the right direction to adequately capture the actual costs of the devastating consequences of climate change and strengthens the case for investing in sustainable solutions, including clean ocean energy. Accounting for the social cost of carbon is not only the right thing to do for the climate, communities, and our ocean but is also the economically smart thing to do to save taxpayer dollars. The social cost of carbon is a vitally important metric for guiding federal climate regulations and we’re looking forward to working with the Administration to ensure a healthier and more sustainable future for our ocean and for generations to come.”
