For the Love of The Ocean

Anja Brandon

U.S. Plastics Policy Analyst

Anja is the U.S. Plastics Policy Analyst at Ocean Conservancy working to advance plastic policy solutions at the state and federal level. She brings a passion for science and conservation and an eagerness to work on science-based policy to the Trash Free Seas (TFS) Team.

Anja grew up on the coast in Seattle, Washington, where she fell in love with the ocean. Committed to sharing this love, she started volunteering at the Aquarium, where she first learned of the overwhelming problems facing the ocean and developed a passion for being part of the solution. She took this passion to Stanford University where she earned a B.S. and M.S. in environmental engineering. During this time, she contributed to research focused on threats to the ocean including studying sea temperature rise on the Great Barrier Reef, ocean acidification in the Monterey Bay Canyon, and plastic pollution in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. Anja was most interested in studying ocean plastics and completed a Ph.D. focused on understanding plastic waste management challenges and developing novel methods to break down common plastics.

Drawn to the intersection of science and policy, Anja then spent a year on Capitol Hill as the AGU/AAAS Congressional Science Fellow to help craft science-based policy. She served in the office of U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley as the lead policy advisor on issues including plastics, oceans, and water.
